Abergavenny Pride: Celebrating Diversity and Supporting Change

in Awareness Raising, Blog Share this
Two white women at an Abergavenny Pride stall. The taller woman has ginger hair, and the slightly shorter woman has brown hair with blonde highlights. They stand in front of a Cyfannol banner, with a table full of leaflets promoting our services.

At Cyfannol Women’s Aid, our mission is to support and empower individuals affected by domestic abuse and sexual violence. We believe in fostering a safe and inclusive community for everyone. Pride events are a celebration of love, acceptance, and diversity. We recognise the importance of these values in our work.

Abergavenny Pride offers an incredible platform to connect with the community, share vital information about our critical services and advocate for a society free from abuse, while celebrating diversity and acceptance. It was fantastic to connect with both people we have supported and those eager to learn more about Cyfannol’s mission.

Taking part in events, we always strive to create interactive activities that engage the public and create a sense of community, no matter their age. At Abergavenny Pride, we created activity sheets for children with themes linked to Pride and an activity called ‘What I’m Proud Of’, where we invited attendees to write on a label what they are proud of or why they are celebrating and then attach it to our Pride bunting. This simple yet powerful activity allowed over 30 individuals to share their personal stories and messages of pride. Here are some of the wonderful quotes we received:

  • I’m proud of Women’s Aid for everything you did to support my daughter (also proud of her)
  • I’m proud of getting out of an abusive relationship
  • I’m proud of my mom’s journey through difficult times
  • Cyfannol for being inclusive
  • Being here with my mummies

These heartfelt messages highlight the diverse and inclusive spirit of Pride, showcasing courage, love, and unity within our community.

One of our primary goals in being part of Abergavenny Pride is to educate attendees about the signs of domestic abuse and sexual violence. We provide resources and information on how to seek help and support, both for individuals themselves and for loved ones who might be in need. By raising awareness, we hope to empower individuals to recognise abuse and take action to protect themselves and others.

We understand that attending a public event can be daunting for those who have experienced trauma. At our gazebo, survivors could find a compassionate ear if they needed to talk and reassurance that they are not alone. We want to remind everyone that help is available.

Pride is a celebration of inclusivity and acceptance, values that are at the heart of our work at Cyfannol Women’s Aid. We advocate for a world where everyone, regardless of their background or orientation, can live without fear of violence. We at Cyfannol are proud to support the LGBTQ+ community and take pride in our efforts to take a person-centred approach to service development and provision.

We’d like to say a special thank you to those who generously shared their recovery stories.  Your strength and resilience are inspiring.  These stories are a testament to Cyfannol’s vision that everyone should be empowered to flourish in a life free from domestic abuse and sexual violence.  They also highlight the continued need for our services to support individuals to make this vision a reality.

We felt privileged to be part of a celebration of love, inclusivity, and acceptance and to share in the joy of everyone present.  We look forward to attending next year’s event.
