One of our greatest challenges is encouraging open conversation about violence against women, domestic abuse and sexual violence. These issues are often surrounded by silence, embarrassment or fear, which can prevent people from recognising abuse or knowing how to respond.
For many years, domestic abuse was wrongly viewed as a private matter between two people. Friends, family members and even communities sometimes looked away, minimised what was happening, or excused the behaviour altogether. As a result, survivors were often left isolated and unsupported.
Today, we know better. Abusive, controlling or coercive behaviour towards a partner or family member is against the law. Just as importantly, we are beginning to understand that abuse is not a “personal issue” — it is a community issue. Everyone has a role to play in challenging harmful attitudes, recognising the signs of abuse, and supporting those affected.
By talking openly, listening without judgement and taking action when we are concerned, we can help to create safer communities for everyone.
