Content Warning: This page discusses sexual abuse, sexual violence, and consent in a general, educational way. There is no graphic detail. Readers are encouraged to take care while reading. Support information is available at the end of this page.

Sexual abuse and sexual violence are often shaped by misunderstanding and misinformation. For communities to respond with compassion and effectiveness, it is essential to challenge common myths and improve understanding.

During Sexual Abuse & Sexual Violence Awareness Week (2–8 February), Cyfannol Women’s Aid is highlighting the importance of learning, not only to support those affected, but also to help prevent harm and strengthen community responses.

Understanding the Reality

Sexual abuse and sexual violence can affect anyone.

People of all genders, ages, and backgrounds can be affected, including men and non-binary people. While women are disproportionately impacted, inclusive understanding ensures that no one is overlooked when seeking information or support.

It often involves someone already known.

Against popular belief, sexual harm frequently involves partners, ex-partners, friends, colleagues, or family members. Recognising this helps communities better understand risk and challenge harmful stereotypes.

Consent is central.

Consent must be clear, freely given, and ongoing. It cannot be assumed based on past relationships, behaviour, clothing, or alcohol use. Learning about consent supports respectful relationships and healthier communication.

Sexual harm does not always involve physical force.

It can involve pressure, manipulation, or an imbalance of power. Understanding this helps people recognise when boundaries are crossed and why clear consent matters.

Why Awareness and Education Matter

Awareness plays a key role in sustainable change. Education helps to:

  • Build informed and compassionate communities
  • Reduce stigma and misunderstanding
  • Encourage earlier access to support
  • Promote respect, consent, and accountability

By supporting learning initiatives alongside specialist services, communities contribute to long-term prevention as well as immediate support.

The Role of Cyfannol Women’s Aid

Cyfannol Women’s Aid works to support people affected by sexual abuse and sexual violence while also investing in awareness, education, and community engagement. This combined approach helps ensure that support is accessible, inclusive, and rooted in understanding.

Community support including donations, partnerships, and advocacy, makes our work possible. It enables our services to continue, education to expand, and conversations to change.

Thank You for Supporting Change

This Sexual Abuse & Sexual Violence Awareness Week, we thank our community supporters and donors for helping create safer, more informed communities. Through learning, awareness, and collective responsibility, lasting change is possible.
