World Elder Abuse Awareness Day

in Awareness Raising Share this

On the 15th of June the world comes together, on World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, to raise awareness of elder abuse.

It is estimated that more than 40,000 older people in Wales experience domestic abuse.

Despite its prevalence, the abuse of older people is rarely acknowledged, and older people facing abuse or neglect often find their voices are left unheard.  The annual World Elder Abuse Awareness Day looks to provide an opportunity for communities around the world to promote a better understanding of the abuse of older people, raising awareness to help people act against it.

Elder abuse isn’t limited to individuals who are extremely frail or ill; it can happen to any older person in any environment. It isn’t always apparent, as it often manifests in forms such as mental, emotional or financial abuse, rather than physical.

In the year ending March 2023, we provided support to more than 80 individuals aged over 60 across Gwent. Each year, we witness a growing number of older people seeking the support they require following experiences of abuse.

He controlled what I was allowed to do and where I was allowed to go. I felt trapped in my home.

I put up with it for so long, I didn’t think anyone would listen!

It’s never too late to reach out for help if you feel things aren’t right.

Please help us to spread the message that violence against women, domestic abuse and sexual violence has no age limit by sharing our leaflet, detailing the support services available to older people across Gwent:
