As today is World Art Day, our Art tutor lisa burkl talks about the importance of Art therapy.
Art therapy can provide a healthy outlet for participants to explore their inner world, develop greater self-awareness, express thoughts and feelings, access creativity and self-esteem, foster healing and well-being. It is an alternate way to communicate, giving a participant a voice, which can be used to communicate something that cannot always be put into words easily.
Facilitating and collaborating with the Art Therapy participants of Horizon SVS is humbling and inspiring. Their creativity and imagination are both refreshing, insightful and thought provoking. I am grateful to have met them and am both impressed and thrilled as to their ability to suspend any misgivings they may have to try something new and give the workshops and each other 100% each week.
The paper exercise highlighted here asked the participants to create a visual metaphor in which a landscape represented various aspects of their life—past, present, and future.
The craft activity represents the culmination of areas and ideas explored over the ‘Self-Box’ Art Therapy workshops. Participants decorated a box that described ‘your – self.” Not just the outer self, the part everyone sees, but the inner self, the more private side – including your hopes, dreams and fears. The outer, for everyone to see, the inner, private – truer feelings.
