This is an important message for anyone who has (or supports people who may have) hidden phones. Please take time to read it thoroughly.
The UK Government is implementing an emergency alert system.
All compatible smartphones will be able to receive an emergency alert in instances where there is a danger to life in the area you’re located – for instance: flooding or public health emergencies.
You will receive an emergency alert even if your phone is on silent or ‘do not disturb’.
The emergency alert will play a loud alarm noise and present a push notification to the user. This could disclose a phone that’s been hidden from an abuser.
This alert system is expected to be tested on April 23rd, so it is important to take action before then.
You can find out more about the plans on the UK Government website
Although the Government advises that this alert system is designed to keep people safe, it has been acknowledged that people who are at risk of domestic abuse can opt out of the system if they need a hidden phone to stay concealed.
If you need to turn these notifications off
In order to turn the notifications off, you will need to head to your settings and look for ‘emergency alerts’.
