Cyfannol Women’s Aid is delighted to announce that BBC Children in Need has awarded us a grant of £106,962 over 3 years. This grant will fund the mentoring project for children who have experienced domestic abuse, helping to make a difference to the lives of disadvantaged children and young people in Monmouthshire.

The mentoring project aims to help each child reach their potential by providing positive role models, building confidence and self-esteem and allowing children to have problem-free time with a trusted adult.

This is the only mentoring project in Wales specifically tailored for children who have experienced domestic violence and has now been running for over 6 years. With the help of BBC Children in Need, Cyfannol Women’s Aid will be able to fund a mentoring coordinator and provide expenses for volunteer mentors who commit their own time and energy to the children. The next round of training for new volunteer mentors will take place in Abergavenny in April and May 2016.

Project co-ordinator Alice Lilley said the project has seen some amazing changes for children who are vulnerable and sometimes at risk of developing anti -social behaviour. “The outcomes for the children can be life changing- we see children who are having problems at home and at school find alternative ways of dealing with things. The mentors build confidence and self -esteem and enable the children and young people to have fun away from anxiety and stress at home. More families who really need our support will be able to access the project now, thanks to BBC Children in Need.”

BBC Children in Need funding relies on the energy and commitment of thousands of fundraisers and supporters across the UK who donate their time and money to support the Appeal. Whether it’s cake sales, wearing pyjamas to school or having a song and dance, every penny of the money raised goes towards supporting projects across the UK.

All grants go to projects working with children and young people living in the UK who may be affected by homelessness, neglect, abuse or poverty, or those who have faced challenges in their lives such as serious illness, disabilities and psychological disorders.
